Surgery is one of the fundamental branches of medicine. There are some clinical situations when invasive technologies are vital. Moreover, some of these situations are urgent and require emergent treatment. This kind of diseases is the subject of our course.
Since XIX century in high medical education in Russia teaching of general specialties is divided into three stages.
First of them is called "Propaedeutics of internal diseases" in therapy and "General surgery" in surgery. At this stage you study the main syndromes of internal and surgical diseases and the main principles of diagnostics and treatment.
At the second stage, when you already have some background in normal and pathological anatomy, physiology, other theory and general knowledge in clinical disciplines, you start to study the most common diseases in their typical manifestation. This stage is called "Faculty surgery" and "Faculty therapy", it means that this stage is more academical than practical.
The third stage is called "Hospital surgery" and "Hospital therapy". It mean that your education includes more practice, you are going to spent more time "by the patient`s bed" studying clinical diversity of surgical diseases.
